The Mail app comes with every Mac. You add your NBT Host address as an “Other Mail Account”, via IMAP: messages stay on the server, and you see them the same way on your Mac, on your iPhone and in Webmail.

What you'll achieve

  • add your email address to Mail, with the correct servers;
  • check the ports and the secure connection;
  • fix the most common connection errors.

Before you start

  • The address must already exist and you need to know its password (see How to create an email account in Enhance). The password is the email address's password, not your Enhance one.
  • The server: mail. followed by your domain (for example mail.firmata.ro) if your domain points to our server; otherwise, or if you're not sure, server.nbt-host.com. You can also see the exact settings in Enhance, under “Emails” » “Manage” next to the address » “Email client settings”.
  • The steps use the menu names from macOS in English. On older versions of macOS, “Settings” is called “Preferences”.

The steps

  1. Open the Mail app.
  2. From the menu bar, choose Mail » “Add Account”. If you already have other accounts, you can also go to Mail » “Settings” » “Accounts” and click + at the bottom left.
  3. Choose “Other Mail Account…” and click “Continue”.
  4. Fill in the name (the one recipients see), the email address and the password, then click “Sign In”.
  5. Mail doesn't find our server settings on its own and shows you new fields. Fill in:
    • User Name: the full address, for example office@firmata.ro;
    • Account Type: IMAP;
    • Incoming Mail Server: mail.firmata.ro or server.nbt-host.com;
    • Outgoing Mail Server: the same server.
  6. Click “Sign In” again. When Mail asks which apps to use with this account, leave Mail checked and click “Done”.

Check the ports and SSL

Mail usually picks the secure connection on its own. If you want to check, or if it can't send:

  1. Mail » “Settings” » “Accounts”, choose the account and open the “Server Settings” tab.
  2. For the incoming server, uncheck “Automatically manage connection settings” and set the port to 993, with “Use TLS/SSL” checked.
  3. For the outgoing server, uncheck the same option and set the port to 465, with “Use TLS/SSL” checked and password authentication. The user name and password are the same as for incoming mail.
  4. Click “Save”.

Folders on the server

On the account's “Mailbox Behaviors” tab, choose the server folders for Sent, Drafts, Junk and Trash. This way, messages sent from your Mac also appear in Webmail and on your phone.

If something doesn't work

  • “Unable to verify account name or password”. The user name must be the full address, and the password must be the email address's password. Try the same details in Webmail (see Webmail: how to read your email in the browser).
  • Your Mac says the identity of the server cannot be verified. Don't accept the certificate: the server name has no certificate, usually because the domain doesn't point to us yet. Enter server.nbt-host.com for both incoming and outgoing mail.
  • You receive mail, but messages stay in the Outbox. Check the outgoing server: port 465 with TLS/SSL, user name and password filled in. If the network blocks port 465, use 587; Mail then uses STARTTLS.
  • The account shows a warning sign next to its name. Click the sign: Mail tells you what's wrong, usually a password that has been changed in the meantime. Enter the new password in “Accounts”.
