A transfer moves your domain from the company that manages it now (the registrar) to NBT Host. The domain remains yours; only who manages and renews it changes.

You don't need a transfer to host your website with us. For that, changing the nameservers is enough (see How to point your domain to NBT Host). A transfer makes sense when you want your domain and hosting in the same place.

What you'll get

  • the domain managed through NBT Host and renewed automatically, once a year, with card payment;
  • the same registrant (you), the same website, the same email — the transfer doesn't move or stop them.

The transfer price for each extension is on the Domains page; for .ro, we confirm it on request.

Before you start

  • The domain hasn't expired. If it expires in the coming days, tell us beforehand: an expired domain is hard or impossible to transfer.
  • You have access to the registrant's email. Codes and confirmations are sent there.
  • For .com and the other international extensions: at least 60 days have passed since registration, since the last transfer and since the last change of registrant details. Before that, registrars refuse the transfer.
  • DNS. If the domain uses the old registrar's DNS servers, these may stop after the transfer — and with them, your website and email. If you have hosting with us, first point the domain to ns1.nbt-host.ro and ns2.nbt-host.ro: its zone is already set up in Enhance, with the records for website and email. If DNS is with someone else (for example Cloudflare), the transfer doesn't affect it.
  • DNSSEC. If you also change the nameservers, first disable DNSSEC at your current registrar.
  • The price. The transfer is paid, and the price depends on the extension. We confirm it with you beforehand, and we start the transfer once payment is confirmed.

Transferring a .com domain (and other international extensions)

  1. Unlock the domain at your current registrar. The option is usually called Domain lock, Transfer lock or Unlock.
  2. Ask for the transfer code. It is also called an EPP code, Auth Code, authorization code or TAC. Some registrars show it on the page, others send it by email.
    • At Cloudflare: Manage Domains » Manage next to the domain » Configuration » Unlock » Confirm and Unlock, then copy the code shown.
  3. Send us the domain on WhatsApp: for now, we only accept transfer requests on WhatsApp. We'll ask you for the code when we start the transfer. It's like a password: whoever has it can move the domain, so don't send it to anyone else.
  4. We confirm the price of the transfer and what else needs to be done. We start the transfer once payment is confirmed. If you are an individual, you also send us the request to start it before the 14 days are up — the text is on the Right of Withdrawal page.
  5. We start the transfer. Your old registrar may send you an email asking you to approve the move. Approve it so it goes faster; if you do nothing, it is usually approved automatically within 5 days at most.
  6. We confirm when the domain has reached us.

For .com, the transfer usually adds one year to the expiration date, and days already paid for are not lost.

Transferring a .ro domain

The .ro registry (ROTLD) gives you an authorization key, which you send to us.

  1. Open rotld.ro/domadmin and log in with the domain name and its password.
  2. Choose Transfer to another registrar.
  3. Tick the consent for data processing and click Send the key.
  4. The key is sent to the domain registrant's email address. If you no longer have access to it, first use the ROTLD email address change procedure.
  5. Write to us on WhatsApp that you want to move the domain. We confirm the price, and once payment is confirmed we ask you for the key, complete the transfer and tell you when it's done. If you are an individual, you also send us the start request, as for .com.

For .ro, you can change the nameservers directly at ROTLD, without a transfer (see How to point your domain to NBT Host).

What the transfer doesn't change

  • The registrant. The domain stays in your name. If you want a different registrant (for example your company instead of you as an individual), that's a separate procedure — for .ro, the transfer of the right of use. Write to us.
  • Your website and email, as long as DNS stays the same.

If something doesn't work

  • The code is rejected. Copy it exactly, with no spaces at the beginning or end, and check that the domain is unlocked. Some codes expire quickly: ask for a new one and send it right away.
  • The transfer is refused because the domain is “locked”. Either the lock is still active, or 60 days haven't passed since registration, the last transfer or the registrant change. Your current registrar can tell you when it becomes possible.
  • You don't receive the ROTLD key or the confirmation email. Check Spam. If the registrant's address is old, update it first: for .ro through the email address change procedure at ROTLD, for the others in your account at the current registrar.
  • The website or email went down after the transfer. The domain was using the old registrar's DNS. Point it to ns1.nbt-host.ro and ns2.nbt-host.ro or recreate the records at your DNS provider. Write to us and we'll help.
  • The domain has expired or is about to expire. Don't start the transfer before we talk: it may be simpler to renew it first.
