What you get
Your website (HTML, PHP or another type) uploaded to the server and visible on your domain. Everything is done in the browser, with no other software. The file manager is included in every web hosting plan.
Before you start
- Prepare your website files on your computer, ideally in a single .zip archive. On Windows and Mac, you do this by right-clicking the selected files and choosing the option to compress them into a ZIP archive. Archive the contents of the website folder, not the folder itself, so the files end up exactly where they should.
- The main page must be named
index.htmlorindex.php, in lowercase. - If your website uses a database, you'll need one too. The steps are in the guide “Creating a MySQL database and user”. For a WordPress website brought over from another host, see the guide “Moving a WordPress website from another host”.
- Your website files go in the public_html folder. On a new account the folder is empty, which is why the domain shows a 403 error until you upload your website. On plans with several websites, each website under “Websites” has its own files, with its own
public_html. A subdomain has its own folder: you can see it on the website page, in the “Domains” tab, in the “DOCUMENT ROOT” column.
We use the English names from the Enhance interface, exactly as they appear on screen. The panel opens in your browser's language. If it opens in another language, switch it to English from the account menu, top right: “My account” » “Language”.
The steps
- Log in to Enhance at https://server.nbt-host.com.
- In the left-hand menu, click “Websites”, then the website's domain. On the website page, open the “Files” tab. The “File manager” opens: folders on the left, the contents of the open folder on the right.
- In the left-hand column, click public_html.
- If the folder has files you no longer need, for example an old page, check them, right-click one of them and choose “Delete”, then confirm. Note: File manager has no trash, so deleted files are gone immediately. If you're not sure, download them first, with right-click » “Download”.
- Click the “Upload” button and choose “File”. Select the .zip archive on your computer.
- Wait until “Upload complete” appears. If a file with the same name already exists in the folder, Enhance asks you (“File already exists”); choose “Overwrite” to replace it.
- Right-click the archive and choose “Uncompress”. The window tells you the archive will be extracted into the folder you're in. If you're replacing an older version of the website, check “Overwrite any conflicting files”, then confirm with “Uncompress”.
- Check where the files ended up. If they're in a subfolder, for example
public_html/site/, open it, check “Select all”, right-click a file and choose “Cut”. Go back topublic_html, right-click an empty area of the list and choose “Paste”. - Delete the .zip archive from
public_html. You no longer need it, it takes up space, and anyone could download it from your website. - Open
https://domeniul-tau.ro. If you still see the old version, reload the page with Ctrl+F5 (on Mac, Cmd+Shift+R).
You can also upload a whole folder, with “Upload” » “Folder”, but for many files a .zip archive is faster and more reliable.
Hidden files, editing and permissions
- Files that start with a dot, such as
.htaccess, appear in the list along with the others. You can edit a text file right in the browser, with right-click » “Edit”. - You create a new file or folder with “New” » “File” or “Folder”.
- The correct permissions are usually 644 for files and 755 for folders. You change them with right-click » “Permissions (CHMOD)”. For a folder, check “Apply recursively” if you want them applied to its contents too.
- With right-click » “Get info” you see the full path on the server, the permissions, the date and the size of the file.
If something doesn't work
- The domain shows a 403 error or a list of files (“Index of /”). The
index.htmlorindex.phpfile isn't directly inpublic_html: it probably ended up in a subfolder (see step 8). It can also be a letter-case issue: the server distinguishes betweenIndex.htmlandindex.html. - Error 500. It's usually an
.htaccessbrought over from another server, with rules that don't work here, for example “cPanel-generated” blocks or anAddHandlerfor a PHP version of the old host. Rename.htaccessto.htaccess-old(right-click » “Rename”) and reload the page. For PHP websites, also check the PHP version (the guide “PHP version and PHP settings”) and the error log: the “Developer tools” tab, the “PHP” card,php-error.log. - Images or styles don't load. The links in your pages point to a path on your computer (
C:\…) or the names differ in upper and lower case (Logo.pngvs.logo.png). - The upload stops or takes a very long time. Upload a single .zip archive instead of thousands of separate files. Also check your free space: on “Home”, in the “Package subscriptions” card, under “Disk space”. For very large archives, write to us.
- The message “Failed to connect” / “Unable to load file manager at this time” appears. Reload the page. If the message persists, write to us.
- The website opens, but the browser shows “Not secure”. The SSL certificate is issued automatically once the domain points to our server, through the
ns1.nbt-host.roandns2.nbt-host.ronameservers. You can see its status on the website page, in the “Security” tab, under “SSL certificates”. If the warning is still there the next day, write to us.
